Chapter 12

As Salvatore clicked through tabs on a company report, he thought of how difficult life as a vampire would be without modern technology. A laptop and an internet connection allowed him to monitor his company despite being unable to attend any meetings or otherwise show his unaging face in public. He had hired well, so he rarely found fault in the decisions his staff made, but that didn’t stop him from looking over every word and number. After all, he had plenty of time to review data, check on investments, and make sure the people running his company were worthy of their roles. He had nothing but time.

The trip to Kfarkattan had disrupted Salvatore’s routine, but after his impromptu meeting with Yoram Smith’s family, he returned to his quiet hotel room and did what he would if he were in his quiet home—he powered up his laptop and logged into the company server. The hunger gnawing at his belly made it hard to concentrate, and the scenarios running through his mind about the possible reasons for that hunger exacerbated the problem, but he had already decided there was nothing further he could do that night to find Yoram Smith, so he told himself to focus on work. He was reminding himself of that goal for what had to be the tenth time in the past hour, when a knock sounded on the hotel room door.

Another Smith, most likely. He had more visitors after an hour in the little nowhere town than in a year’s worth of Sundays at home. But that was because the endlessly large Smith family didn’t live in Vegas. With an aggravated sigh, Salvatore closed his laptop and pushed his chair back. They better not be trying to renege on the agreement they’d reached.

By instinct, he listened for the number of heartbeats outside his door and counted one. If Toby was back to annoy him, Salvatore was going to teach the little shit a lesson. He was plum out of patience. Almost as soon as he had the thought, he dismissed it. That wasn’t Toby’s scent. It wasn’t the scent of any of the men he had seen that night. Woodsy, earthy, and rich. The scent was familiar but not. His brain working overtime to place the intriguing perfume, Salvatore quickened his pace, flicked the locks on the door, and yanked it open without bothering to look through the peephole. Dozens of snapshots simultaneously flooded his brain.

Broad shoulders.

Thickly muscled arms.

Sandy brown, closely shorn hair.

Thick eyebrows.

Well-worn jeans.

Long fingers with neatly trimmed nails.

Tan skin with freckles sprinkled over a straight nose.

A five o’clock shadow on a strong jaw.

Ocean blue eyes.

And finally, a recognition of the scent. It was deeper than it had been thirteen years earlier, thicker and more vibrant on a body than in blood. And it coiled through him and settled in his core.

“I heard you were looking for me.” Like his scent, Yoram Smith’s voice had matured. It too was deeper and richer.

Too distracted to form words, Salvatore stepped aside to make space.
